I ride bikes, think about bikes, talk about bikes, work on bikes, bikes, bikes, bikes. I never get tired of 'em, and I always try to find a way to work bikes in to whatever plans we have. My family, not quite the same level of obsession...err...appreciation. Don't get me wrong, they love bikes too, but sometimes they would rather do something else, heaven forbid.
My oldest daughter loves to ride, but it's been hot here in East Tennessee this summer. Some of the recent evening rides turned much shorter than planned with groans of being sweaty and tired. At first I fought it, and tried to drag her along further. Guess how that went? Yeah, not so good. In fact a ride or two after the greatest rumblings about the heat, she didn't even want to go ride. Blasphemy!
Instead of beating my head against the proverbial wall of summer heat, I kept my cool. I had to make it fun again for her. I had to go against my fix it mentality and not push, instead, let her get there on her own. Okay, that's not entirely true. I also used my greatest carrot to get her back on the bike. Dogs. The child loves dogs. So we took an evening cruise down to the Pistol Creek dog park in Maryville. The picture above shows what it's all about. If you're not having fun, something's wrong.
Rider or is it writer?
My name is Adam Harris. I'm a lifelong cyclist. I love bikes. All types of bikes. I hope I can relay the joy that cycling provides me through glimpses into my thoughts and some of my mini adventures.
