What is the 1 to 5 challenge? Sadly, it's not related to the number of hours in the work day. Which is too bad, because that would really be nice for extra time on the bike! The 1 to 5 is a challenge is about riding more though.
Try to use your bike for trips that are 1 (or less than 1) to 5 miles in length rather than getting in your car. It will help you "shed the monster" (Google the clip from People for Bikes if your unfamiliar) and I bet it will help you shed the pounds too. Not to mention some other healthy benefits for both you and the environment.
I read an article recently which stated that riding regularly (read: daily) even at distances as little as a mile or two, will kick your metabolism into a high gear. It will also add to your stamina on the bike. More saddle time is always good, don't underestimate the quick trips. Try it and see the advantages for yourself. Maryville, Alcoa, and the surrounding areas are perfect for this lifestyle change. The greenways, neighborhood roads, and bike lanes make it super convenient.
Using your bike for transportation is not only fun and healthy, it has other benefits too. For example, you get rockstar parking. I love riding up to the Maryville Barley's. It's always busy, a good thing....but the parking is always full, a bad thing IF you drive. Ride your bike and you cruise right up to the front door and lock to the nearest post, rack, or other immovable object and strut in the door like the biking rockstar that you are.
So, ditch the car as often as you can. Your mind and body will benefit from it, as will the environment.
